The school council was a step in the declaration made by Paul in 1997 that ‘the school aim for the student to be an active citizen in an international world’, an ambition recognised subsequently by showing the students that their views and requests would be taken seriously and acted upon if they were reasonable. The students we spoke not only provided examples such as improvement in toilet cleanliness, changing of the range of drinks in the vending machines and establishing a sixth form common room, but also illustrated higher order tasks such as editing and publishing the school magazine.

Underpinning this student engagement was the expectation that interpersonal skills would be developed, with each student intended to become ‘someone who can relate to people, be respectful, have empathy, can communicate and articulate well, is a team player and at the same time can stand on their own feet and who’s got pride in their appearance’ (Sir Paul in his first interview with us, March 2012). A common litany used in the daily assemblies he indicated was:Nobody wants to work with someone who’s rude, nobody wants to work with someone who’s disrespectful, nobody wants to work with anybody that’s not a team player, nobody wants to work with people who use foul language, nobody wants to work with people who are racist or abusive.
